A Million Dollar Question

We all talk about passion, commitment, determination etc etc etc......Aspiring engineers businessmen read autobiographies of the eminent few to get inspired and take a cue from them. I am a simple but a highly motivated individual...who is always beating his brains out trying to gauge what interests him...Well thats something many of us have pondered upon without any noticeable result and in an attempt to carry on with something that doesn't interest us, we become more frustrated and a debacle to our family and society.

Sometimes i seriously, intentionally and whole heartedly appreciate our parents for carrying on with something which they don't like for so long again and again and again( C'mon who likes cooking three times a day...give me a break and who likes to keep going office daily carrying out his mundane work all day). The implications can be extremely annoying and irritating, often leading to instability in family-life.

The need I felt, writing this article over here, cause I was moved by a very interesting problem confronting a very good friend of mine. My friend is an artist, an extremely creative soul, a dramatist, but is unfortuantely stuck in an engg. course called Information Technology, purely because of parental pressure( cause engg in Inda is the easiest way to get employment).

Still he kept on working on many scripts, organizing plays in the college and opening his very own drama club with a little assistance from the college. Generally the viewership rose and the talent was there to see. Now came the campusing time and this creative soul had to go back to his f****g(thts wht he says) books and prepare for placement.

He gets the job, family is happy, flounting their child name in the relatives and society. Now he realizes that he doesnt want this from life, he realizes that he wont do justice to his talents if he continues as such. He plans out everything, how he would do an advertising course, how he would approach directors, how he would generate contacts, where would he live etc etc etc.

Normally after the engg. course gets over, we get a break of 2-3 months before joining any organization. He thought this time would be enough, to initiate his venture. Now an eternal force holds him by the scruff of his neck, plays a game. His joining date is 5 days after graduation. He has to join, no alternative, his dreams shattered, no options. His parents wont allow him to leave that organization. He is feeling choked, blaming the eternal force for all the mishappening that has ever happened to him.

A very good friend suggests," Dekh Yaar u owe a lot to your parents, u cant just say no". At this he cries realizing his dreams are slowly but surely going down the dumps. His very good friends stands there helpless and hapless, thinking of the quandary which is so perplexing.

Do u people have an answer to this million dollar question. Should this person go against the world and pursue his dreams, the so called interests, or should he surrender, like most of us have till now.

I have become quiet a veteran now, facing this dilemma, but i guess my friend is fortunate enough to know what he wants from life. Many of us or most of us are still pondering over what is our ultimate goal in this life, our ultimate karma.

A famous yet inspiring book "The Alchemist" paints a very interesting picture in this regard. It says that you just need to follow the signs that god arranges for you. Now that calls for living in the present and not pondering over the future and just keep on following the signs. If you are made to do something you would ultimately land up there, COME WHAT MAY.

Seldom do you find people who know what they have to do in their life, WITH their life, this applies specially to those who are in the IT sector in India. And believe me, those who have no clue where they'r going or what they want from life, are better off than the others!! Atleast they cannot get frustrated , nothing can become a barrier for them. Its really unfortunate that your friend has a Dream to fulfil, in a society where people are like a herd of sheep. One following the other. I feel sorry for him. May god help his soul!
But on a more serious note, may he find a way out of all this. And may he reduce a little bit of FAT from his body!! :)

gaurav, u as well as ur frend alrdy know wat i hav to say..so no issues, and i fully agree with sachin, thats the practical way of thinking and going about life!!
but i wud like to say that i do not agree with sarang's point of view. its not always a nice scenario wen u exist w/o a rsn, w/o a direction, w/o a destination..though its true thats wat we future IT professionals in india face: part of a herd of sheep.
lets hope for the best...for THE frend and for evryone in the IT sector.

Well well if u talk about the alchemist , the signs and the god may be i will have to tell you my firend what exactly you need to follow is your natural instinct , that spark of yours which ignites and rekindles your already a battered and torn soul .....
there wont be any god or sign which will make u realize that spark of yours ....its all upon you to realize and visualize ....

and if you fail to realize what triggers off that spark or what exactly is the tipping point then you will be just another of the commmon man around the
neighbourhood bro .......

hope it has not put u into much more dilemma lolz

Anonymous said...

welll its now not abt realizing tht spark coz i blv ignition temp has already achieved in him he juzt needs oXygen to survive or burn tht fuel in him
god s not goin cum but tht suprpower has already helped him lotttt more ways !!!!its juz he need to realize tht help
its not abt god and signs its abt findin a 1 side solution to a dilemma wellllll
every solution has a problem !!!!if 1s keen in tht problem thn no1 can help tht 1
it will get recursive dilemma
so lets not get into dat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your heart is the only driving force in your life..
You should follow your passion always..
Like the Alchemist.. Follow your heart.. Look for signs..
BULLSHIT!!!! (In Capitals!!)
The problem is not that simple. Its easy to sit back in the comfort of one's own room and comment on these things, telling people to be optimistic and considering yourself as one..
But you cant always put yourself into others' shoes even if you wanted to. Life is not that simple.
You cant read Paulo Coehlo and take a decision that strong! You guys are in IT, let me tell you in your words.. You make decisions and plans and develop aspirations in COMPILE TIME.. but unfortunately, you live in RUNTIME.. And you cant handle RunTime Defects in Compile Time!! Especially if the software is designed by a third party (Your fate/god). But fortunately, the third party tool that Im talking about, is more or less like OPEN SOURCE.. You can have add-ons and customize the product!!
Obviously, if the problem was simple, this guy wouldnt have become so frustrated first of all. And I believe, you can give advice to this person ONLY if you have a real PASSION for something in life, and against all odds, you have "followed your heart" and achieved your aim.I know the guy in question, and I really know him, that's why I write all this bullshit!! Cheers to the RunTime Defects!! :)

Correction on my last post.. I ("THINK") I know this guy well.. :)

Guys..i am very sorry for replying so late....
Guys when i said signs, i did not intend to say that u have a laid back attitude, no sincerity, no passion for doing things, just nothing and god would still be there to help u out, bu giving out signs....
and thats not wht paul coehlo said....i know its very easy to sit in room and comment about optimism, yes when i myself have done many compromises with life.
Now u talked abt following your natural instincts, tell me one thing how many people u personally know that have a knack of acting, script writing, direction.
you would find a lot of engg. a lot of IT people....and do u think a person can be good at these skilla without following his natural instincts, without following his passion...
Life for me is a quest for survival, and here have to look at various things while coming to decisions, here my friend who faces the dilemma of being disowned by his family, if he doesnt go by their decisions....
Now thts thinking abt the society ur personal relationships....that affect ur decison making...
Coming to sarangs comment...
As i said earlier...life decisions are dependent upon many things as u rightly said....they are not so easy...u used a very good analogy though..
As agreed upon, due to some vociferous comments, tht we leave listening to our hearts, leave following our passion and start doing what the crowd does because society expects us to behave in that way....how do u expect convincing urself of doing the same kind of work all thru ur lifetime which u have desisted like anything since its inception.....explain me that....
A person without dreams is a person without life.....thats why its important to have dreams, to have passion to have it in ur eyes...to take on the world, to defend urself whenever necessary and not to be ashamed or uncertain of wht u do with ur life...
A little frustration is healthier as compared to a long time disgruntlement, which may happen by not following ur instincts and not looking for the signs....
Im sorry for u all if u have this kind of an attitude....probably i also in my coming life, have to make some more compromises, but still i would be happy that i gave myself a chance atleast...and thats most important....whts say....
